Yes, Probe Me, But Probe Others Too, Jonathan Tells Buhari

Outgoing President, Goodluck Jonathan while at the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council which he presided over at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday said he will not ask the incoming president not to probe him, but he should also probe past governments or else he will call it a witch-hunt. According to the president, so many things and governments, including state governors all deserved to be probed. He says past governments have placed Nigeria on a huge debt to the tune of $1bn and he wondered how they got there. He also spoke about oil wells, oil fields, marginal wells and others admitting they have not be allocated properly according to law. Continue…
“Some people are even calling for the probe of this government. I agree that in Nigeria, there are a number of things that we will probe; very many things. Even debts owed by states and this nation from 1960 up to this time. They are saying it is Jonathan’s administration that is owing all the debts.
“I believe that anybody calling for probe must ensure that these probes are extended beyond the Jonathan administration, otherwise to me, it will be a witch-hunt. If you are very sincere, then it is not just the Jonathan’s administration that should be probed.
“A number of things have gone wrong and we have done our best to fix them. The Attorney General is aware of the massive judgement debts, if we aggregate all of them, it is about $1bn. How did we come to this kind of huge judgement debts? These issues should be probed.
“How do you allocate our oil wells, oil fields, marginal wells and others? Do we follow our laws? All these should be probed. I believe all these and many more areas should be looked at,” he said

UNIOSUN VC, registrar, bursar sacked

The Governing Council of the multi-campus Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has sacked three principal officers.
The council recommended for approval of the Visitor, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the termination of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Okesina.
The council, on Tuesday, gave letters of termination of appointment to the Registrar and the Bursar, Dr. Julius Faniran and Alhaji Fatai Lasisi.
The termination of their appointments followed the recommendations of the Visitation Panel set up by the governor.
The panel probed the allegations of financial misappropriation and mismanagement in the university.
But the university’s chapter  of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the decision.
In a statement by its Chairman, Dr. Abiona Oluseye and eight other officers, the union said the action was done in bad faith.
The union also said the sack was prejudicial and violates the principle of equity and fairness.
It said: “It is instructive to state that a visitation panel was constituted by the governor and the report submitted.
“ASUU-Uniosun is of the opinion that it would have been better for the council to wait for the White Paper on the report to be released by the governor before assuming the position of a judge.
“Against the backdrop of the on-going, ASUU-Uniosun hereby calls for the immediate reversal of the decision, pending the outcome of the White Paper on the matter.”

Teacher Arrested In Atlanta For Allowing Have Sex In Classroom

An Atlanta-area teacher has been arrested after a parent complained he allowed middle school students to have sex in a storage unit in his classroom.

Multiple media outlets report 25-year-old Quentin Wright, a math teacher at The Champion School in Stone Mountain, was taken into custody on Tuesday.

He has been charged with four misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

An arrest warrant says Wright arranged times with students when the classroom would be empty and gave them condoms.

The investigation began after a mother said she found text messages between Wright and her son.

“I was in a state of disbelief when I read all these messages," the mother said, asking to remain anonymous.

The mother said she looked at her 14-year-old son's phone and discovered a shocking exchange of text messages last Thursday between him and Quinton Wright, a math teacher and coach at Champion Theme Middle School in Stone Mountain.

"Basically he's allowing the students to have sex in a storage room of his classroom," the mother said.

“He told my son you can have it from 7:30 to like 8:30,” the mother said reading some of the messages. “'Did you tell the girl what's going to happen? That she cannot tell anybody?’ basically don't tell anyone I'm allowing you to use my room.”

The mother said the teacher also sent her son a calendar showing teachers' schedules and a text saying he did not have condoms.

“It’s very sickening and disheartening, because we trust administrators and educators when we drop our kids off at school,” the mother said.

A DeKalb County Schools spokesman says they are cooperating with the District Attorney's Office and Wright has been removed from the
classroom.

Uniosun Researcher gets $4.45 Million Grants by Canada (IDRC)

An international research consortium led by Clement Adebooye, Professor of Agronomy will receive a total of $4.45 million for a project with the Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Parakou, University of Manitoba and University of Saskatoon to advance indigenous vegetables technology in southwest Nigeria and Benin Republic. Together, the research team will work to expand novel farming practices to 50,000 farmers and promote demand through indigenous vegetable production and value addition technology. The UNIOSUN team will lead innovative farming techniques research, training of farmers, value addition technology and general superintendence of project activities.
In Nigeria, more than 1,000 farmers increased their yields and doubled their incomes by using improved farming practices to grow underutilized indigenous vegetables. These improved farming practices were developed during the field research carried out in southwest Nigeria from 2011-2014 by a team of researchers led by UNIOSUN. In Benin Republic, fertilizer micro-dosing and rainwater harvesting techniques helped more than 10,000 farmers achieve equally beneficial results with other crops, despite degraded soils.
The research team is now combining these innovations to bring the practices to 50,000 farmers through demonstration trials, outreach efforts, support and training for seed producers and marketers. They will also help establish local committees to address issues such as productivity, marketing and processing. The efforts could improve the incomes of more than one million West African farmers.
The project being led by UNIOSUN professor is among the four international projects which have been collectively awarded $17 million by Canada’s IDRC. They are part of an effort to scale up the most promising research supported under IDRC’s Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF).
CIFSRF is a $124 million fund that works to increase food security in developing countries by funding research in agricultural innovation and nutrition, and fostering collaboration between developing-country researchers and Canadian experts.

My wife is not a mode - Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday said his new wife, Lara, was not a model.
He said he would rather described his new wife as “a model in my heart.”
Oshiomhole, who made this known at a special thanksgiving mass held at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Auchi in honour of the new couple, added that Lara was not a replacement for his late wife, Clara.
The mass was attended by the governor’s children – Steve, Jane and Adams (Jnr.); the parents of his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Fortes, as well as other dignitaries.
The governor also debunked media reports that his new wife “is a top model,” a speculation he said might have been generated because of her “poise and beauty.”
“When I read newspaper stories and they say that Comrade has married a ‘top model’ I’m like, ‘Maybe it’s another person.’
“The lady that God has directed to my path and heart to marry is not and was not a model. Of course, she looks beautiful and I understand that is why people assume that this kind of a lady must be a model; but of course, she is a model in my heart and we hope and pray that we will be models in the heart of our God and I think that is the most important thing,” Oshiomhole stated.
He, however, called for prayers from Nigerians to support him and his new wife.
The governor said, “I ask you to please continue to pray for us; it is not easy. I lost my first wife and it is not possible to replace her. Yes, I have married another, but it is not a replacement.
“You cannot replace a wife, especially the one you married when you were young and you were anonymous. Nobody knew you from anywhere; you had nothing; no car, no house. Now, that you can never replace, but I understand that under the Catholic doctrine I am entitled to have another wife which is what I am trying to do.”
Earlier, the parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Valentine Anavbeokhai, in a homily titled, “Communicate the truth in Christ,” had urged Christians “to avoid misrepresenting the truth in their daily communication as they all had an obligation to speak the truth, live the truth and, if the need arose, die for the truth.”
He also blessed the couple and wished them well.

We have destroyed more B’Haram’s camps

Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade
The Director Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, has said that troops have destroyed 10 more terrorists’ camps in the Sambisa Forest stronghold of the insurgents.
Olukolade also said that the soldiers who carried out the raid killed an unspecified number of insurgents in the operation.
However, Olukolade said that a soldier died and two other sustained injuries from land mines during the operation.
Olukolade, whose comments were contained in a statement on Sunday, said that one of the most prominent camps of the terrorists, the Dure Camp, was among the camps that fell to the superior fire power of the troops.
According to him, three of the camps were newly established by the insurgents before the commencement of the onslaught on the Sambisa and four others at a place called Iza in the forest.
He said, “An unconfirmed number of terrorists died on Saturday as 10 additional camps used by terrorists were overrun in the continuing offensive operations against the terrorists in Sambisa Forest.
“The Dure camp, which is one of the most prominent camps in the forest, witnessed the fiercest battle as the Special Forces descended heavily on it before it finally fell.
“Four of the camps were located in a place called Iza within the forest while three others were noted to be recently established by the terrorists before the assault began.
“One soldier died from one of the land mines encountered in the operation while two others were also wounded.
Olukolade added that the troops captured several vehicles mounted with anti-aircraft guns and armoured vehicles from the insurgents.
The Defence spokesman added that several of the insurgents who were fleeing the attack were killed in an ambush as they tried to escape from the forest.
He said that the fleeing terrorists were involved in suicide missions at Bitat and had encounters with troops at ‘Kiseru across the border with Niger.’
He stated that the fighter pilots of the Nigerian Air Force were maintaining effective aerial surveillance to track the movement of terrorists in the ongoing operation.
“The Operation to clear the terrorists in Sambisa and other forests is continuing as troops in all fronts have been alerted to be on the lookout for fleeing terrorists.”

I won’t share govt money to anybody – el-Rufai

The Kaduna State Governor-elect, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, says it will be a wishful thinking for anybody to believe that he will share public fund to individuals or groups in the state after May 29.
He said his administration would not condone the sharing of public funds to anybody in the name of godfather or group, no matter how highly placed.
Rather than doing that, el-Rufai said the state resources would be judiously utilised for the development of the state and the people.
This was just as the governor-elect said that the debt profile of the state would run into N100bn before the May 29 hand over date.
El-Rufai noted that as the administration of the Peoples Democratic Party ended in May, both at the federal and state levels, what both the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari and himself needed was prayers from Nigerians to succeed.
The former Minister of the FCT added that the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and that of Governor Mukhtar Yero had become so bad that they had to obtain loans to pay salaries.
According to el-Rufai, Nigerians should stop congratulating him and the President-elect but should rather pity them and pray for them to succeed because of the “bankrupt economy” they would inherit.
El-Rufai spoke at a reception organised for him by the Kaduna Peoples Association at the Arewa House, Kaduna on Saturday.
The governor-elect , who told the gathering that the state, led by Yero, had incurred N90bn debt, noted that before the May 29 hand over date, the debt might increase to N100bn.
Meanwhile, at a prayer session for them by the APC Yoruba Political Forum in Kaduna State on Saturday, el-Rufai insisted that the incoming government needed nothing but prayers from Nigerians.
The governor-elect said, “When people call to congratulate me or come to congratulate me and General Buhari, I always tell them, thank you, but what we need is your sympathy and prayers.
“This is because, myself and Buhari are taking over bankrupt governments; it is so bad that the Jonathan administration is finding it difficult to pay salaries. In fact, they had to obtain loan to pay salaries.
“In the case of Kaduna State, the Peoples Democratic Party’s government has incurred debt to the tune of over N90bn and this may get to N100bn before May 29. Therefore, what you have done is exactly what we need to succeed.”
El-Rufai urged other elected officers to strive hard to deliver the dividend of democracy to the electorates.
He warned that if they (elected officers) failed in the discharge of their duties to the people, they would be voted out like the PDP come 2019.
He assured the people that in his administration, there would be no discrimination among indigenes or settlers while noting that the Yoruba community had lived peacefully with their hosts over the years in the state.
