Osun Crisis, Beyond My Control – Aregbesola

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State on Friday said the economic situation in the state that led to his administration’s inability to pay workers’ salaries was beyond his control.

He said it was heart-rending that he had found himself in the situation which he described as a quagmire.

Aregbesola spoke with State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed-doors at the Defence House in Abuja.

He said he was not happy the same way a head of a family would feel when he cannot meet the needs of his family members.

He said, “No head of the family will be happy that he cannot feed members of the family.

“Extend that to state, it is heart-rending that I am in this quagmire.

“But no matter how sad (I don’t want to use the word ‘depressed’), no matter how unhappy I am, the truth is that I will not fail to say that it is a situation absolutely beyond my control.

“I led an administration in receipt of regular allocation in which I do my budget.

“Unfortunately, this allocation started falling in rapid form that totally disorganised my budget and any other arrangement.”

Aregbesola said those who want to be objective would readily admit that the Osun State of November 2010 when he assumed office and Osun of today are not the same.

He said people must give credit to the changes that his administration had brought about in the state, saying the changes were not miracles but were occasioned by application of resources.

The governor further explained that with the unexpected and sharp decline in revenue, his administration had a dislocation.

The result of that dislocation, he explained, is the sad experience.

The governor added, “Were it to be Osun alone, probably I would not have an excuse.

“I pray it does not continue. I am not sure if there will be any state that will actually escape from the biting effect of the absolute sharp drop which I call economic disaster that we are grappling with.

“Since my inauguration on November 27, 2010, I had made it a duty to pay salary on or before 25th of every month up until January 2014 when that became practically impossible.

“I have been giving the same staff who today are, regrettably and painfully, not being paid annual bonus that we call 13th month salary. There was no demand for it. I just felt that workers must be encouraged, they must be inspired.

“I did that religiously and faithfully from 2010 to 2013. The development that led to this began precisely in July when we received the June allocation and it was short by 40 percent.

“Since then, what we have been receiving from the Federation Account is less than the wages, personnel cost. It is far and not mildly less.”

Aregbesola said he struggled with it till October 2014 when there was nothing else he could do.

He said the situation was further compounded by the fact that his government could not go to bank to borrow to pay the wages commitment.

The governor however said that with the efforts he was putting in place, there might be solution by month end.

“It is a sad development. I am struggling to reduce the pain as much as possible and I am almost at the end of the efforts I am making to ensure that by the end of this month, I will have enough to at least meet to a large extent the salary needs of the workers,” he declared.

NAHRMS DINNER AND AWARD NIGHT

When it comes to dinner night, the department of Human Resource Management (HRM's) dinner has always been a hit as far as okuku campus is concerned. Things went well as some lecturers from the department came to cheer their executives up.

It would have gotten a 100% rating if not for some mixed up at the dinner. for example ( A guy won the award of Mr Dope and was asked to come out and compete with someone for the award he had already received earlier which he later lost to the opponent).

Nevertheless, the dinner was still a hit. kudos to the President, other executives and the speaker of the Department Mr Tosin.

Lets Ball in tonight at the FAMSSA dinner... We hope to have a funfilled night... leggo

Tinubu Urges Youths To Follow Their Ideas

Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress’s national leader, disclosed how he had been mocked two years ago after vowing to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to Vanguard, the politician recalled the past as he spoke at the African Young Entrepreneurs Empowerment Nigeria over the weekend.
Addressing youths, Tinubu expressed confidence that one should always follow one’s ideas “even if no one believes in you”
Tinubu, who was represented by the Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode, was quoted as saying:

“If I didn’t believe in the bold initiative, I wouldn’t have lent myself to the unprecedented merger of the political parties that became the APC. We wouldn’t have challenged the incumbent party controlling the central government, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“There is no incumbent that has ever lost an election in this country. At the beginning of that journey, we were laughed at, we weren’t given a chance. We were told that we have embarked on an exercise in futility. Yet we believed in the justness of our call. The criticism didn’t deter us but encourage us.
“That exercise has become a history-making exercise. The party that was described as dead on arrival has, however, given birth to a new government, spirit and better democracy.”
In the course of the selection of the Lagos state House of Assembly leadership, the PDP told Tinubu to call his party to order. Specifically, “to call the lobbyists to order, in order to ensure that the process is free and fair”. The PDP stressed the importance of voting based on achievements, for the sake of good governance in the country.

Yes, Probe Me, But Probe Others Too, Jonathan Tells Buhari

Outgoing President, Goodluck Jonathan while at the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council which he presided over at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday said he will not ask the incoming president not to probe him, but he should also probe past governments or else he will call it a witch-hunt. According to the president, so many things and governments, including state governors all deserved to be probed. He says past governments have placed Nigeria on a huge debt to the tune of $1bn and he wondered how they got there. He also spoke about oil wells, oil fields, marginal wells and others admitting they have not be allocated properly according to law. Continue…
“Some people are even calling for the probe of this government. I agree that in Nigeria, there are a number of things that we will probe; very many things. Even debts owed by states and this nation from 1960 up to this time. They are saying it is Jonathan’s administration that is owing all the debts.
“I believe that anybody calling for probe must ensure that these probes are extended beyond the Jonathan administration, otherwise to me, it will be a witch-hunt. If you are very sincere, then it is not just the Jonathan’s administration that should be probed.
“A number of things have gone wrong and we have done our best to fix them. The Attorney General is aware of the massive judgement debts, if we aggregate all of them, it is about $1bn. How did we come to this kind of huge judgement debts? These issues should be probed.
“How do you allocate our oil wells, oil fields, marginal wells and others? Do we follow our laws? All these should be probed. I believe all these and many more areas should be looked at,” he said

UNIOSUN VC, registrar, bursar sacked

The Governing Council of the multi-campus Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has sacked three principal officers.
The council recommended for approval of the Visitor, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the termination of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Okesina.
The council, on Tuesday, gave letters of termination of appointment to the Registrar and the Bursar, Dr. Julius Faniran and Alhaji Fatai Lasisi.
The termination of their appointments followed the recommendations of the Visitation Panel set up by the governor.
The panel probed the allegations of financial misappropriation and mismanagement in the university.
But the university’s chapter  of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the decision.
In a statement by its Chairman, Dr. Abiona Oluseye and eight other officers, the union said the action was done in bad faith.
The union also said the sack was prejudicial and violates the principle of equity and fairness.
It said: “It is instructive to state that a visitation panel was constituted by the governor and the report submitted.
“ASUU-Uniosun is of the opinion that it would have been better for the council to wait for the White Paper on the report to be released by the governor before assuming the position of a judge.
“Against the backdrop of the on-going, ASUU-Uniosun hereby calls for the immediate reversal of the decision, pending the outcome of the White Paper on the matter.”

Labour unions in Osun State on Monday declared a total strike to press home their demand for payment of their six-month salaries. The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, who read the address of the labour unions at a press conference in Osogbo, said the strike would begin on Tuesday, May 26, after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum given to the state government.

That no worker should resume work until announcement is made by the labour bodies to that effect.”
